"Feeding London: the forgotten market gardens of South West London"
The Environment Trust's "Feeding London" exhibition traces the growth, peak and decline of the production of fruit, vegetables and flowers in south West London. It reveals the rapid and radical change of land use arising from London’s ever-growing population, from the desperate need to increase food production in the 1800s, to the demand for housing for the new ‘commuter classes’ in the 20th century. Historian David Lawrie will guide visitors as availability permits and demonstrate his beautifully crafted model of a market garden, loosely based on Homewood Nursery. We are delighted to show the exhibition at Kempton Steam Museum on the last steaming weekend of the year, Sat 19th - Sun 20th November, 10:30 - 4pm. Entry through Museum: £7, concessions £6, under 16s free. More venue details here.
"Feeding London" was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund as part of the Environment Trust's project Jam Yesterday, Jam Tomorrow.
