PRACTICAL VOLUNTEERING

If you like to spend time out of doors and would like to develop your gardening and conservation skills, we currently run regular practical work mornings at various sites around the borough:

  • Kilmorey Mausoleum, St Margarets Road (behind the brick wall almost opposite the Ailsa Tavern): every Monday lunchtime. Please call 07955 172 940 to check details
  • Vineyard Passage Burial Ground, Richmond (behind Vestry Hall): first Saturday of the month from 10.30 am. Contact Jack Felt on 8332 2947 or Martin Edgar on 8948 1577
  • Various locations around the borough: see below for the schedule for the next few months

Saturday 28th February Bridge House Gardens, Richmond Garden maintenance and planting; possibly inspecting and repairing nesting rafts around Corporation Island. If there are sufficient volunteers, we will also help with maintenance of Cambridge Gardens on the opposite side of the river. Meet on Richmond Riverside beside the boathouses and bridge.
Saturday 28th March Kilmorey Mausoleum, East Twickenham Selective scrub removal, maintenance and path improvements. The site includes a protected wildlife garden managed by the Trust on behalf of the council. If there are sufficient volunteers, we will hold a simultaneous event at Orleans Gardens near Marble Hill Park, undertaking towpath maintenance and repairing the cross-river views of Orleans House. Meet at the Kilmorey site, which is almost opposite the Ailsa pub on St Margaret’s Road, East Twickenham (access via a black door in the high wall beside the road)
Saturday 25th April Terrace Gardens and Petersham Meadow Various works in support of the council’s plans to improve and landscape the whole area. Meet at the end of Buccleuch Gardens beside what used to be the Three Pigeons pub
Saturday 30th May Richmond Cemetery, Grove Gardens Maintenance of cemetery near the Chapel and other work in line with the cemetery management plan. Meet at Grove Gardens Chapel, close to the junction of Lower Grove Road and Greville Road, Richmond
Saturday 27th June Thames towpath and foreshore Removing the highly invasive Himalayan balsam from the towpath and foreshore. Meeting point to be confirmed nearer the time
Everyone is welcome at these events, although children under 17 years old must be accompanied by a responsible adult. It helps us to plan things if you can let the office know at least 3 days beforehand if you intend coming. Please try to arrive promptly at the start for the initial briefing and stay as long as you wish. All you need is a pair of tough boots or shoes, some old clothes and a robust sense of humour!
