A very busy day for volunteers at the Environment Trust saw 16 diverse young people give up their Saturday to help out our lovely neighbours at Canbury Community Garden. Marilyn Mason, one of the founders of the garden, invited us to come along and give them a hand. She had plenty of work waiting for our willing volunteers and they got stuck in to planting, painting and shifting enormous stones around.
The War Memorial Gardens in central Kingston will host the Remembrance Sunday service in the coming weeks - so Young Place Shapers leant a hand to get the gardens ready to welcome its important visitors.
We were delighted to be joined by volunteers from the Challenge's graduate programme, HeadStart, who worked hard as part of our crack, elite team on Friday 28 October.
Young Place Shapers has now completed four fantastic, individually-designed benches at Victoria Recreation Ground in Surbiton. As well as bringing splashes of colour to a shady side of the park, we've helped to create new attractive seating areas. Last Thursday our work day coincided with Quadron park services being at the park. While we painted, they did a great job clearing the edges and cutting back the bushes and low-hanging branches.
Fantastic work from a team from the Challenge helped YPS to get part of Victoria Recreation Ground in Surbiton back in shape. They were joined by Molly who is a YPS volunteer and a fine artist - and her skills were put to use to turn three neglected benches into a riot of colour and creativity! The whole day was spent designing, painting, sweeping, raking and clearing shrubs so that park-users have the very best chance to enjoy this stretch of the park.
Young Place Shapers are getting busy in Victoria Recreation Ground, Surbiton, on Monday 1 August to bring a bit of colour back to a corner of the park. Joining forces with a team from the National Citizen Service again this summer, YPS will redecorate some benches and clear up the area to make the park as welcoming as possible for locals.
Young Place Shapers is excited to have the chance to work with a group of dynamic students from Kingston Hub, a student-led group from Kingston University. Last Wednesday YPS met with a team of students who are going to be working with us for six weeks to have a look at how we can attract more volunteers and analyse how best to communicate with the people YPS is targeting with its work. YPS thinks it's not bad on Facebook and Twitter but our initial discussions with the Hub crew show that we need to be moving into Instagram and Snapchat - and quickly ....
It's been a busy few weeks for Young Place Shapers. A group came together during the Easter holidays to plant native, bee- and insect-friendly wildflower seeds at Canbury Gardens on a super sunny morning. With fantastic support from Quadron - who provide park services to the Royal Borough of Kingston-upon-Thames - and visits from lots of locals, everyone got down to work.
Young Place Shapers is very excited to be working with media production company, Digital Drama, on the Stories of Our Park project this spring.
Over three sessions, Stories of Our Park will train a group of young people in recording, interviewing and editing skills. They will use these new skills to go out and speak to park users at Canbury Gardens, Kingston, to find out:
what locals like about their parks and
why they are important to them
They will then work together to create an audio/ sound archive of their work.
