From small scraps of wood cold frames grow!

What does Horticultural coordinator Sophie Harman get up to on a rainy day at the model market garden? Build a cold frame of course!
Built entirely with re-claimed materials the cold frame has been designed to flat pack when not in use so we can store it for the next season. To help protect the seedlings from slugs, snails and other insects we will staple in place a weed suppressant lining.
The cold frame will enable us to harden off propagated seedlings before finally planting them out in the garden. This process enables them to gradually adjust to the outdoor weather and climate so when the seedlings are finally planted out the change in temperature isn’t too much of a shock and they have grown strong enough to handle changing weather conditions.
As well as being made from re-claimed timber the polycarbonate roof to the structure will help allow light through whilst protecting young plants inside | |

Even the hinges of this structure have had a past use! Once in place the inside of the cold frame will be lined with weed suppressant fabric to ensure the seedlings are as well protected as possible. |
