Spring has sprung at the model market garden

The weather has been warming up and finally shoots of new green growth can be seen at the model market garden.
Our cabbage, kale, lupin and chive seeds have begun germinating in our cold frame – these seeds were planted earlier in March in our own, home- made seed compost made from finely sieved leaf mould and horticultural sand.
The cut flower bed is slowly taking shape. The first shoots from our gladioli corms are beginning to emerge and the tulips and daffodils which were planted just before Christmas will soon be in bloom. During this Tuesday’s session we further planted more gladioli corms for successional planting and started the direct sowing of Larkspur seeds – Larkspur are a type of annual delphinium which are great as cut flowers. Delphinium formosum, also known as the ‘showy larkspur’ is known to have been grown as a cut flower at London market gardens during the 19th century.
