St Leonards Court Air Raid Shelter Project Update!

Today excavation work began with the aid of Hirst Conservation in the raised garden area above St Leonards Court Air Raid Shelter in East Sheen. The work aims to further investigate the condition of the shelter and inform conservation work to preserve it.

When the shelter, which was built in two phases, 1938 and 1941, had its extension built to contain the night rooms what helped keep the ceiling waterproof was a layer of bitumen which coated the top of the cast concrete structure before it was covered in soil.

St Leonard's Air Raid Shelter talk

Inside this modest turret, stairs lead down to a large air-raid shelter, built in 1938 for the residents of St Leonard's Court in Mortlake that accommodates more than 70 people both day and night. Together with the Environment Trust, the Mortlake with East Sheen Society (MESS) is working hard to conserve the building, with the aim of bringing it into use as a visitor attraction and a place for children to learn about life in the Second World War.

Grove Gardens Chapel tell-tale monitor

To Grove Gardens Chapel with Tim Little (Vice Chair) and Sophie Harman (Heritage Project Manager for Historic Buildings). A narrow crack has appeared on the side of the chapel to the right of the altar and the job is to install a tell-tale monitor, which will measure any change in the width of the gap. An expert has told us that it is probably caused by settlement rather than a structural problem, but we need to check over a period of time to be sure.

Open House Weekend 2015 – Our best yet

On Sunday 20th September the Environment Trust was involved in opening 4 buildings in the Richmond borough for open house weekend. These properties are not regularly open to the public so it was great to swing open the doors on such a lovely sunny day and welcome our visitors, some of which had started queueing outside some of our buildings!

New Featured Building Section on our Wiki Page

The Historic Environment section of our wiki now has a new featured building section to highlight buildings which we find particularly interesting.

The research is gathered as part of The Story of Our Streets project; bringing attention to the lesser known architectural heritage of the local area with a focus of buildings of townscape merit.

This month we are featuring the Broad and Co printing works building, located behind King Street and Water Lane in Richmond. This building is one of few remaining examples of Richmond's industrial heritage.

Huge success for the air raid shelter clear out day!

~~At 9am on 6th May volunteers gathered outside the turret entrance to the air raid shelter in St Leonard’s Court, East Sheen to begin what some may have thought to be an impossible task.

The shelter had been used for decades by maintenance staff for the nearby flats to store vast amounts of items including 8 large heavy doors, around 80 cast iron pipes and fittings, old tins of paint, chairs, concrete blocks and even a collection of old doormats!

U3A Architecture Group visit Kilmorey Mausoleum during restoration work

Twelve members of Croydon U3A Architecture group recently had a very enjoyable visit to the Kilmorey Mausoleum. When we arrived workmen were busy replacing some of the cast iron railings that surround the Mausoleum. The pink and grey granite of the monument, which stands in the centre of a wildlife garden surrounded by a high wall, looked very impressive in the spring sunshine. The Mausoleum itself is in a remarkable condition despite being moved twice. Once from Brompton Cemetery and then Woburn Park, Chertsey before its final resting place in St Margarets.

Timber frame model by Sophie Harman

New Heritage Project Manager for Historic Buildings Sophie Harman has a thing for timber framed buildings…

This 1:8 scale model was made by Sophie as part of a research project into a building called the Old Cottage in Cheam. It is accurate in almost every way possible even being held together with wooden pegs, no screws or glue! The actual late 15th Century building was saved from demolition in the 1920’s and was re-built where it stands today.
