Harold Hope Read, In the Park

In the Park

(Watercolour, 22cm x 24cm, 8.5" x 9.5")

Harold Hope Read (1881-1959) was an artist, cartoonist and book illustrator. He was born in Greenwich to a Quaker family. Harold became an art student in his teens and by 1905 he was submitting cartoons to the magazine Punch. From the mid 1920s he lived as an illustrator for various magazines and was based in London, Brighton and, from 1933 until his death, in Tunbridge Wells.

His is reputed to have contributed a regular cartoon column for the London Evening Standard. His housekeeper and mistress, Hilda, became an obsessively favourite subject. Read’s work has an almost voyeuristic quality, but his work was nonetheless sympathetic to his varied subjects and the quotidian details of their lives. Website www.haroldhoperead.org.uk
