Burton's Tomb

Burtons TombThis Grade II* listed building is on English Heritage’s Register of Buildings at Risk. We are working with the Friends of Burton to secure funding for the restoration and maintenance of Sir Richard Burton’s mausoleum in Mortlake, so that this exceptional hero who bridged Christianity and Islam can be duly respected. The restoration will cost around £50,000, and we are delighted that English Heritage has awarded a grant of £21,800 towards this total. Funds have also come from private donors and the Heritage of London Trust.

Update: October 2010 - The completed restoration!

On a bright but cold 20th October, the Patrons, Friends and project team gathered to celebrate the completion of the restoration of Sir Richard Burton's Mausoleum. The Mausoleum was re-dedicated by Father Richard Whinder Priest of St Mary Magdalen RC Church, following a reading by Jean Hall. The guests then continued the celebrations with tea in the Church Hall and heard speeches by Bamber Gascoigne, patron of the Trust and the Mayor of Richmond upon Thames, Cllr David Marlow. Angela Kidner, Environment Trust Projects Manager, thanked the many people who participated in the restoration or contributed time, energy and funds.

The restoration was directed by Helen Molton of HOK Architects, and carried out by Holden Conservation. Funding and support were provided by English Heritage and the Heritage of London Trust, and by the Friends of Burton. The project was managed by the Environment Trust, and the building will be maintained by the Trust for the next ten years - so funds will continue to be very welcome!

Update: July 2010

Holden Conservation began the work of restoration on the Mausoleum on 5 July, with the cleaning of the stonework and protection of the site.

The fascinating artefacts contained in the tomb were photographed in situ before being removed to Holden's workshop where an inventory was made and cleaning begun.

The mausoleum's structure was checked and found to be sound, and the conservation of the interior has started.

Outside, the decision has been taken to apply limewash to match the Forest of Dean stone and to provide protection, and the frieze of stars and crescents (around the edge of the roof) has had a base coat applied ready for gilding.

Completion is expected early in September. Alexa Bailey's magical pictures of the artefacts, taken before their removal can be seen on the Burton Appeal website.
