In 1868 Dr Langdon Down founded Normansfield Hospital, Teddington as a home for people with learning difficulties, caused by what he identified as Downs Syndrome. Theatre and music formed a key element of his patients' educational programme and he therefore commissioned a working theatre, now widely recognised as one of the most important private theatres in Britain and Grade II* listed. Normansfield was bought for development by Laing Homes who have inherited certain responsibilities towards the Theatre along with the purchase of the land. The Theatres Trust has been given the duty of care of the Theatre after Laing Homes have undertaken substantial restoration work to this scheduled building at risk. The Environment Trust for Richmond upon Thames has a watching brief.
