Stepping On Out

Monday 12 Oct 2015. Community Garden Co-ordinator, Kate Robinson led an enthusiastic group from Stepping On Out at the Model Market Garden earlier today. Activities included thinking of recipes for using the fruit and veg in the garden and matching produce with historical pictures from the Royal Horticultural Society. The highlight of the workshop was planting onion and garlic - making a straight row with a length of string, planting to the correct depth, watering and keeping the newly planted rows safe from accidental trampling.

"Feeding London" Open Day and Heritage Walk

One of the most important botanical reference sources in the world, the Library of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, is currently hosting our "Feeding London" exhibition, the hidden histories of market gardens in Middlesex. For the Open Day on Saturday 10th October staff organised a fascinating display of books and journals in several European languages about growing and marketing fruit and vegetables, as well as books about the local history of market gardens.

Produce from the Model Market Garden in Marble Hill Park served as still life subjects, harvested on the morning of the workshop by Kate Robinson, Community Garden Co-ordinator,

Twickenham Heritage Walk

Saturday 5 September 2015. Our second Twickenham Heritage Walk took place on the same day as a major rugby game at Twickenham Stadium and so we expected to see large crowds. The photo by the chimney of the old Poupart's factory on Third Cross Road shows a sizeable group but they were all there for the history rather than the rugby. Tours of London guide Pam McHutchon led thirteen keen walkers around the sites of former market gardens, including Marsh Farm.

Model Market Garden news

Community Garden Co-ordinator Kate Robinson writes: The Model Market Garden has had another very productive year. Donations from the produce table on Tuesday and Thursday mornings are building up slowly but surely, and we now have a vegetable box in the café at Marble Hill on those days as well.
