Historic Environment

Historic Environment programme

The Environment Trust works with communities to raise awareness of our local historic environment. We also help to protect and conserve heritage buildings for future generations. Our programme involves working with community projects, education and providing skills and knowledge.

Conserving heritage buildings

The Trust has a role in conserving and maintaining the building fabric of several significant buildings in the borough including:

  • Grove Gardens Chapel, Richmond - Grade II listed
  • Kilmorey Mausoleum, St Margarets - Grade II* listed
  • Sir Richard Burton’s Mausoleum, Mortlake - Grade II listed
  • St Leonards Air Raid Shelter, East Sheen - Grade II listed, at risk
  • Vineyard passage burial ground, Richmond - Grade II listed walls & railings

Community projects

The community project The Story of Our Streets is an opportunity to volunteer in a heritage project. The objectives are:

  • research and learn about the heritage of the borough
  • record buildings of heritage interest
  • create an online resource

All our volunteer research is being recorded on our wiki for everyone to explore.

The Trust’s work and that of its many volunteers has unlocked funding from sources such as; Heritage Lottery Fund, English Heritage and Civic Pride. Work has been done to conserve and renew the buildings enabling them to have new uses and/or be enjoyed by the community. Please read our Historic Environment blog to follow our activities or become a volunteer.
