The Story of Our Streets
The Story of Our Streets
This community project celebrates the borough's historic built environment and aims to record buildings of heritage interest. Our volunteers are provided with skills in research, local heritage and the built environment, and refer to the Buildings of Townscape merit list compiled by the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames conservation team. We also can identify heritage buildings to add this list which are designated according to the following criteria;
- Any building, not statutorily listed, dating before 1840;
- Selected buildings, not statutorily listed, dating 1840-1939 of definite quality and character according to the following categories;
- was Grade III on the former statutory list;
- retains a substantial portion of original features;
- has group value;
- has association with well-known characters or events;
- displays special value within a certain type or illustrates social, economic or industrial history (e.g. railway stations, schools, almshouses etc.)
- by reason of its appropriateness to the site and inter-relationship with other buildings makes a unique contribution to the townscape.
- Post 1939 buildings, not statutorily listed, which are exceptionally good examples of the architectural output of the period and/or are the work of principal architects.
All our volunteer research is being recorded on our wiki for everyone to explore.
The Trust runs various events for our volunteers including; heritage walks, research visits to RIBA, The National Archives and Richmond Local Studies.
